Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Old city of Jerusalem

The church of the Holy Sepulchre is, no doubt, one of the holiest places for the majority of the Christians in the world. This is believed to be the place of the Golgotha were Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected. The church is located in the Christian quarter of the Old City and it doesn't matter if you are Christian, Jewish, Moslem or if you belong to another religious group. You just can't miss it! I remember when I visited it for the first time I expected something special but nothing like that… its architecture, vivid history and the presence of six different Christian groups who share the church makes this it even more exceptional.

In more than 1700 years of existence the Holy Sepulchre went through difficult times: it was several times destroyed and rebuilt and all these changes led to the church that we see today. A building from the crusader period situated on remnants of the former huge byzantine church built by Helena, mother of the emperor Constantine, in the 4th century CE. The church is a labyrinth of several chapels, some of them are in the underground and some are upstairs. The last four stations of the Via Dolorosa are located inside the church.of which the rotunda houses the most important part: the Edicola – the shrine of Jesus tomb.
